KBEAR 104.1 uses its airwaves to save the lives of
children fighting cancer and other deadly diseases
Anchorage, AK – January 24th, 2008 – Radio station KBEAR will host its annual Country Cares for St. Jude Kids® radiothon Thursday and Friday, January 31st and February 1st,6am- 7pm live from the KBEAR Station. The radiothon raises money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, the world’s premier center for the research and treatment of cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. Last year, Country Cares raised more than $34 million in pledges nationwide and KBEAR helped contribute to that total, thanks to generous, local listeners.
Among this year’s highlights, St. Jude patient Sara will share her experience with radiothon listeners. Sara was diagnosed as a very young girl with a very deadly brain tumor, however just last year she was officially deemed a cancer survivor. Sara is just one of the tens of thousands of children who have benefited from the cutting-edge research and treatment at St. Jude since its opening in 1962. Local listeners interested in helping Sara and other children like her can pledge a donation by calling 1-800-995-5257 or by visiting KBEAR’s Web site.
The Country Cares for St. Jude Kids program began in 1989, after Randy Owen, lead singer of the music group ALABAMA, met St. Jude founder Danny Thomas. Since its inception, Country Cares has grown to be one of the most successful radio fundraising events in the nation with more than 200 radio station partners raising more than $315 million in pledges.
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization.
